What does it mean to be a Lutheran?

by Faith Lutheran Church member Adam Edwards

As a member of an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) church in the Bible Belt, it’s not uncommon to hear the question, “What is a Lutheran exactly?” or “What do you guys believe? “It’s a bit of a loaded question, and I sometimes find it easier to talk about what we don’t believe in contrast to some of the things I have seen and heard from my brothers and sisters in more fundamentalist churches.

For starters, we don’t believe in the exclusion of anyone.  We believe that we are all sinners saved by grace through faith in Christ, and since Jesus came into the world to save sinners, all are invited to share in His love.

Second, we don’t believe in “easy answers” to the tough questions about faith.  Our pastors encourage questions about scripture, and we acknowledge that because God’s ways are not our ways, there will be times when we don’t understand.  We believe that it is perfectly okay and even healthy to keep asking those questions while at the same time, trusting in God’s love.

Finally, we don’t believe that God can be boxed into any one set of cultural, national, or political beliefs.  As those called to follow Jesus, we center around the greatest commands, which are to love God and love others.  Those commandments extend well beyond the walls of the church and are seen in the way we serve our neighbors with compassion and understanding.  It extends to the poor, the outcast, and the marginalized, and even those we view as our enemies.  As Lutherans, we acknowledge that as we follow Jesus through serving others, we deepen our loving relationship with God and with each other.
